How to Water Houseplants Without Killing Them
Overwatering kills more houseplants than anything else. Here is how to tell when your plant actually needs water, how to water it well, and what to skip.

Watering sounds like the easy part. It is actually the thing that kills the most houseplants, and it kills them through kindness rather than neglect. Clemson’s Home and Garden Information Center puts it plainly: the main cause of death of potted plants is over-watering.
The good news is that watering well is a skill you can learn in about ten minutes, and it does not involve a schedule, an app, or remembering anything. It involves checking.
Why “how often” is the wrong question
Almost everyone arrives at plant care wanting a number. Once a week. Every ten days. Something to write on a sticky note.
Every reliable source refuses to give one, and it is worth understanding why rather than reading it as unhelpfulness. Clemson answers the frequency question with there is no pat answer to this question, because the honest answer depends on your plant, your pot, your light, and the time of year.
Think of it this way. A pothos in a small terracotta pot on a bright windowsill in July might genuinely need water twice a week, whereas the same plant in a large plastic pot, in a dim corner, in January, might need it once a month. A schedule built for one of those situations will quietly drown or starve the other, which is why the number that worked for someone else so often fails in your house.
So the skill is not memorising a frequency. The skill is learning to read the pot in front of you.
The finger test: how to tell if your plant needs water
This is the whole technique, and it costs nothing beyond a willingness to get a fingertip dirty.
Push your index finger into the potting mix. Clemson’s instruction is to stick your finger into the mix up to the first joint; if it is dry at your fingertip it needs water. That is roughly an inch, or the first knuckle.
- Dry at your fingertip — water it.
- Still damp — leave it and check again in a few days.
- Wet and heavy, days after you last watered — stop watering and read the overwatering section below.
Do not judge by the surface. The top of the mix dries out first and dries out fast, particularly under a heater or in a sunny window, so a pot can look bone dry on top while remaining thoroughly soaked an inch below. That single misreading is responsible for a great deal of well-meaning overwatering.
If you would rather not guess while you are learning, a soil moisture meter reads the moisture at root depth rather than at the surface. It is not essential, and your finger will catch up with it within a month or so, but it is a reasonable confidence aid early on.

Getting the timing right is most of the job. Getting the method right is the rest, and it is where a lot of otherwise careful people go wrong by giving small, frequent splashes.
- Take the plant to the sink, if it is small enough to carry. This is easier than trying to be tidy in place.
- Pour slowly and evenly over the surface of the mix, not in one spot. Aim at the soil rather than the leaves and crown.
- Keep going until water runs out of the drainage hole. UC’s guidance is to water so that some water drains out the hole in the bottom, because that is what tells you the water has reached the whole root zone rather than just the top layer.
- Let it finish draining for a few minutes.
- Empty the saucer. Do not skip this one.
That last step matters more than it sounds. UC is direct about it — do not let the pot sit in water, empty the saucer or tray after watering — and explains why: the water that drains out carries minerals with it, and this briny water is not good for the roots if the pot sits and drinks it back up.
Soluble salts are the mineral residues left behind by tap water and fertiliser as water evaporates. They collect in the mix over months and show up as a pale crust on the rim of the pot or on the surface of the soil. Watering thoroughly and letting the excess run away is what keeps them moving out of the pot instead of building up in it.
What about watering from the bottom?
Bottom watering is the practice of standing a pot in a tray of water and letting the mix draw moisture up through the drainage hole. It is genuinely useful in a couple of situations, such as a mix that has dried out so completely that water runs straight down the gap between the soil and the pot without soaking in anywhere. New Hampshire Extension notes that you should only need to soak pots if the potting mix was allowed to dry out completely.
The catch is that bottom watering never flushes anything out of the pot, so the salts described above simply accumulate. If you bottom water most of the time, top water every month or so to rinse the mix through.
What makes one pot dry faster than another
If you want to know why your friend waters weekly and you cannot, this is the answer. These are the factors that actually set the pace.

Read your own plant against that list and the frequency question usually answers itself. A snake plant in a big plastic pot in a dim hallway is on the right-hand side of every row, which is why it can go a month between drinks. Consider a small basil plant on a sunny kitchen sill — left-hand side of every row, and it may need water daily.

Overwatered or underwatered? Read the roots
Confusingly, an overwatered plant and an underwatered plant can look almost identical from above, because both droop, both drop leaves, and both eventually turn yellow.
The difference is the soil. A plant that is wilting in dry soil is thirsty. A plant that is wilting in wet soil is in trouble — because damaged roots cannot draw water up even when the pot is full of it.
If you want certainty, slide the plant out of its pot and look. Illinois Extension gives a clear colour guide: healthy plants generally have white roots. If the roots are rusty orange to light brown, it is underwatered, and if the roots are dark brown to black, it is overwatered.

Two of those come straight from Illinois Extension, which notes that fungus gnats are reduced by letting the plant dry completely between waterings, and that brown-edged leaves may indicate an erratic watering schedule or exposure to cold drafts.

What to do if you have already overwatered
First, some reassurance: overwatering once does not kill a plant. Overwatering as a habit is what does the damage, and habits are fixable.
Root rot is a group of soil-borne fungal diseases that attack roots kept too wet. Wisconsin Horticulture identifies Pythium spp., Phytophthora spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium spp. as the usual culprits, and notes that most root rot fungi prefer wet soil conditions. The fungi are already in most potting mixes. Constant moisture is what lets them take over.
If the plant is only mildly affected, the fix is often just restraint. Illinois Extension’s advice is to withhold water until the soil is quite dry and gradually begin a new watering schedule.
If the roots are already soft and brown, and especially if there is a bad odor, take the plant out of its pot and work through it:
- Rinse the soil off the roots so you can see what you are dealing with.
- Cut away every soft, brown, or smelly root with clean scissors. Keep the firm, pale ones.
- Repot into fresh mix in a pot with drainage holes. Wisconsin specifies a pasteurized commercial potting mix, NOT soil from your garden.
- Go down a pot size if you removed a lot of root. A large pot of wet soil around a small root system is what caused the problem.
- Water sparingly until you see new growth.
Water quality: what is safe to pour on your plants
Most people can stop worrying about this. Tap water is fine — UC’s guidance is that usually tap water is ok to use for most houseplants.
There is one real exception, and it catches people out because it sounds harmless.
Two smaller points worth knowing:
- Temperature. Very cold water is a shock to roots. Clemson suggests the water temperature should be between 62 and 72 °F, which is essentially lukewarm from the tap. Nothing to measure — just avoid pouring cold water straight onto a warm plant.
- Mineral crust. If you see a white crust building on the pot or soil, UC recommends you gently remove the crust and flush out the pot with clean water, then let it drain fully.
How watering changes in winter
This is the single most common reason a plant that was thriving in August is struggling in December. Nothing about your care changed, and that is the problem.
Growth slows in winter as light drops. Rooms are often cooler. Both mean the plant uses less water, and the mix stays wet far longer than it did in summer. Watering at the summer pace into a plant that has slowed down is straightforwardly overwatering.
New Hampshire Extension’s winter guidance is direct: you can expect to have to water less when plants are kept at cooler temperatures, and it is important to wait to water until the potting soil is very dry.
The practical version: keep doing the finger test at the same frequency, but expect the answer to be “not yet” much more often. Do not stretch the check out — stretch the watering out.
Indoor heating also dries the air, which is a separate problem from dry soil and is not solved by watering more. New Hampshire Extension recommends aiming for around 40 to 50 percent humidity. A pebble tray or a small humidifier is the practical answer; misting is not.
Three watering myths worth unlearning
“Put gravel in the bottom for drainage.” This is probably the most widely repeated piece of houseplant advice, and it does not do what people think. Wisconsin’s repotting instructions explicitly say to avoid putting rocks or gravel at the bottom of the pot. A drainage hole drains a pot. A layer of gravel just raises the level of wet soil.
“Ice cubes are an easy way to water orchids.” The appeal is obvious — a measured dose, no mess. But it delivers a very small amount of very cold water, and cold water is the thing Clemson’s temperature guidance steers you away from. Water normally, then drain properly.
“Misting waters the plant.” Misting puts a little moisture in the air for a few minutes. It does not reach the roots, and roots are what drink. If your plant needs humidity, group plants together, use a pebble tray, or run a humidifier. If it needs water, water the soil.

Watering is the highest-leverage skill in houseplant care, because so many problems that look like something else — yellow leaves, drooping, gnats, brown tips — trace back to it. Get the check-then-water habit down and most of your plant problems stop happening rather than needing to be fixed.

How often should I water my houseplants?
There is no set number of days, and any guide that gives you one is guessing about your home. Watering depends on the plant, the pot, the light, and the season. Check the soil instead. Push a finger into the potting mix up to the first knuckle, and water only when it comes out dry. That check takes five seconds and it beats every schedule.
Is it better to water houseplants from the top or the bottom?
Both work. Top watering is faster and it rinses built-up minerals down and out of the pot, which bottom watering does not do. Bottom watering is useful when the mix has dried out so completely that water runs straight down the sides without soaking in. If you bottom water most of the time, top water occasionally to flush the salts through.
How do I know if I have overwatered my plant?
The clearest tell is a plant that looks wilted while the soil is still wet. Wilting normally means thirst, so wilting in damp soil usually means the roots are damaged and can no longer take water up. Yellowing lower leaves, a sour smell from the soil, and fungus gnats around the pot all point the same way.
Can I use tap water on my houseplants?
Tap water is fine for most houseplants. Softened water is not. Water softeners work by adding salt, and that salt builds up in the pot and damages roots. If your house is on a softener, use water from an outside tap, filtered water, or collected rainwater instead.
Should I put gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage?
No. It is one of the most repeated pieces of plant advice and it does not work. A layer of gravel does not help water leave the pot, and university extension guidance on repotting rotted plants specifically says to avoid it. What actually drains a pot is a drainage hole and a loose potting mix.
